International Day of People with Disabilities (IDPD) is organised on December 3 every year to raise public awareness of people with disabilities by commemorating their achievements and contributions made to the society. In Singapore, Serving People with Disabilities (SPD) has been committed to developing the potential of people with disabilities to their fullest and to empower them with greater independence. Its greatest aim is to build a more harmonious society where everyone is “a part of it, and not apart from it”.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Despite better job prospects for the disabled over the last two decades, Associate Professor S. Vasoo from the Dept of Social Work, in his paper, ‘Employment Opportunities for the Disabled in Singapore: Some Issues and Challenges’, asserts that other factors still persist in hindering their employability, such as persistent negative stereotyping by employers. Other hurdles that this group faces also include transportation difficulties, physical barriers, non-proactive management and inadequate vocational skills and educational level. Increasing public awareness on the assets of having people with disabilities in the workplace, changing employers’ mindsets, reducing physical barriers and customising transportation are just some of the measures Vasoo has proposed to solve these challenges.<\/p>\n
