Singapore acknowledges the importance of the natural environment to economic performance and livability, but the true obstacle lies in assessing the country’s environmental assets at a national level.<\/p>\n

Awarded with a $4.8 million project over three years, NUS Associate Professor of Geography Daniel Friess will be leading the national-scale assessment of Singapore’s natural capital, along with Professor Adrienne Gr\u00eat-Regamey (ETH Zurich). The project, Nature Capital Singapore, seeks to examine the current conditions of Singapore’s major ecosystems, as well as quantifying their economic and societal value. While there already exist methods to assess natural capital at a national level for several temperate nations, this project will be the first assessment conducted for a tropical and heavily urbanised country.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hosted by the Singapore-ETH Centre (SEC), an overseas research institute of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich), Nature Capital Singapore involves collaborators from organisations such as the National Parks Board (NParks), the Centre for Urban Greenery and Ecology (CUGE), NUS, NTU, and Singapore-MIT Alliance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
