A Lien foundation-NUS study revealed that more elderly Singaporeans are being cared for at home and centre-based care services instead of nursing homes. Co-authored by Associate Professors Elaine Ho and Shirlena Huang (NUS Department of Geography), the study further discovered that the monthly cost of taking proper care of a severely disabled senior at home is often higher than that of a nursing home run by a volunteer welfare organization.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the study revealed that there is a lack of capacity and funds allocated for home and centre-based services here. There was also a lack of regulation in these sectors as many are not licensed and therefore not required to provide mandatory service requirements. This may cause implications to seniors who wish to \u201cage in place\u201d, as their health may be compromised due to lack of trained caregivers and adequate facilities.<\/p>\n
