It was designated by the United Nations to emphasize the different needs and challenges facing the elderly today, and to reiterate how older, healthy people can continue to function and contribute productively to society. In Singapore, the elderly population is projected to increase further, placing more responsibility on the younger populace to assume a caregiving role.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2c679\" data-offset-key=\"ckfkb-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"ckfkb-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"ckfkb-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2c679\" data-offset-key=\"evig2-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"evig2-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"evig2-0-0\">The typical Singaporean family is primarily responsible for elderly caretaking. Despite government policies to prevent elderly mistreatment, the family\u2019s social environment is closely associated with such mistreatment. Associate Professor Srinivasan Chokkanathan (NUS Department of Social Work) examines early detection and intervention in cases of elder abuse in \u2018Prevalence and correlates of elder mistreatment in Singapore\u2019 (<em>Journal of Elder Abuse &amp; Neglect<\/em>, 2018).<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2c679\" data-offset-key=\"b3h5h-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"b3h5h-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"b3h5h-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2c679\" data-offset-key=\"1du2s-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"1du2s-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"1du2s-0-0\">A\/P Chokkanathan finds that psychological and physical abuse within the family and a lonely social environment increase the risk of elderly mistreatment. Depression and a decline in mental health are also common among mistreated elderly.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2c679\" data-offset-key=\"7f8n-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"7f8n-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"7f8n-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"2c679\" data-offset-key=\"49k8k-0-0\">\n<div class=\"_1mf _1mj\" data-offset-key=\"49k8k-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"49k8k-0-0\">Although the research suggests Singapore\u2019s mistreatment rate is low, A\/P Chokkanathan recommends a nation-wide study to determine the magnitude and extent of elderly mistreatment.
