We would like to congratulate Assistant Professor Lin Weiqiang (NUS Department of Geography) and Associate Professor Irene Ng (NUS Department of Social Work) on being awarded the inaugural\u00a0Social Science and Humanities Research (SSHR) Fellowship\u00a0and\u00a0Social Science Research Thematic Grant\u00a0(SSRTG) respectively.<\/p>\n

The SSHR fellowship was launched in August 2018 as the Social Science Research Council (SSRC)\u2019s first talent development scheme. Seeking to both encourage local talent while strengthening social science research in Singapore, it assists academics whose research is foregrounded in issues of strategic and policy relevance to Singapore. With this fellowship, Dr Lin will receive research funds of up to $1 million over five years.<\/p>\n

Funding from the SSHR Fellowship will aid in Dr Lin\u2019s project, \u2018Peopling Infrastructure: Aeromobilities, Automation and Labour Mobilisations in Asia\u2019, which aims to better understand the inner-workings of the aviation industry and simultaneously better inform policies surrounding labour and technology.<\/p>\n

Launched in 2016, the SSRTG represents one of the SSRC\u2019s key initiatives to support high-quality and impactful interdisciplinary research on Singapore and Asia. Winning projects are selected based on intellectual merit and their potential impact on and contribution to society and the economy. A\/P Irene Ng will receive funding from between $1-$10million over 3-5 years.<\/p>\n

A\/P Ng\u2019s project, \u2018In-work Poverty and the Challenges of Getting By Among the Young\u2019, seeks to explain \u2018in-work\u2019 poverty (i.e. being poor while employed) experienced by the working class. By focusing on challenges faced by less-educated young workers, A\/P Ng\u2019s research aims to understand interactions between work and earnings, as well as young workers\u2019 mental health and cognitive ability, to improve the reach and impact of Singapore\u2019s formal programmes to better meet these workers\u2019 needs.<\/p>\n
