With increasing concerns over issues such as data privacy, freedom of expression, and misinformation due to the rise of the Internet and popularity of social media, NUS is establishing a new Centre for Trusted Internet and Community (CTIC). Professor Lee Mong Li (NUS School of Computing) and Professor Audrey Yue (NUS Department of Communications and New Media) will be leading the CTIC as Director and Deputy Director respectively. The CTIC will begin operations on 1 April 2020.<\/p>\n

The first-of-its-kind centre aims to research and develop solutions to create an accountable Internet and ascertain the trustworthiness of information. The approach by CTIC is anchored on three pillars \u2013 technology (leveraging Artificial Intelligence and data science technologies to identify misinformation), human (understanding the cognitive and socio-psychological factors motivating the production and consumption of information), and policy (studying regulations that can be used to mitigate misinformation).<\/p>\n

The CTIC will apply its findings to understand problems such as the weaponisation of bias and information spread online, and the challenges of the digital divide. The Centre will also take on a proactive role in collaborating with stakeholders to encourage responsible public discourse, and inculcating a culture that prioritises facts over misinformation through public education efforts.<\/p>\n

Work has already begun for CTIC researchers, who are studying the patterns of information dissemination in relation to the recent Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) situation in Singapore. Their study is expected to be completed by the end of March 2020 and the findings will be published on the Centre\u2019s website.<\/p>\n
