Unlike the usual tourist routes crowded with visitors from within China, this journey was shaped by a more personal encounter with Southeast Asian Chinese connections to southern Fujian. Tang notes how local dialects, food, culture, and overseas Chinese history felt unexpectedly familiar, evoking memories of the sounds and traditions of older generations.

In Quanzhou, she observes buildings resembling the old shophouses and Western-style houses associated with earlier Chinese migrants to Southeast Asia. These hybrid buildings, known as “番仔楼” or Nanyang-style overseas Chinese mansions, combine Chinese and Western architectural elements and were mostly built by migrants who had crossed the seas to Southeast Asia to make a living. Although many now face disrepair, high restoration costs, and complicated property rights, they remain important cultural heritage sites that carry histories of migration, entrepreneurship, family obligation, and return.

The article focuses especially on an old family house in Xingcuo, built by Tang’s father-in-law’s father, who had migrated from Fujian to Malaya and later to Singapore. After achieving some stability through work and business, he built the house in 1957 to provide a home for relatives. This house, named after ideas of gratitude, diligence, and kinship, once held a large extended family and embodied the overseas migrant’s continuing responsibility to their hometown.

For Tang, the house is not only an architectural relic. It is also a reminder of how migration rarely meant a clean break from home. Her father-in-law’s generation carried memories of hardship, separation, and obligation, while later generations inherited fragments of these ties through stories, visits, and family names attached to particular places.

The article also reflects on the challenges of preserving such heritage. Many ancestral houses are privately owned, dispersed across families, or tied to complicated inheritance arrangements. While local authorities have shown interest in conserving overseas Chinese architecture, turning these homes into cultural tourism sites is not always straightforward. They are valuable not only because of their style or age, but because they hold intimate and sometimes unresolved family histories.

By weaving together travel, family history, architecture, and overseas Chinese memory, Tang shows how heritage is often encountered through small moments: a signboard on an old house, a familiar dialect, a remembered meal, or a story about a relative who once crossed the sea for work. These details reveal how migration histories remain embedded in places long after families have moved elsewhere.

Read the article here.

Photo: iStock/Cassia Bars

What happens when an old house is no longer just a building, but a vessel of memory, migration, and return?
