\n<\/strong>Practice research is a growing and developing approach which is making it possible for researchers, social workers and service users to collaborate and through the collaboration to develop and qualify social work and expand research methodologies altogether. However, establishing new partnerships and methods is not only a bed of roses, it is challenging and provoking as it will entail both new and different roles and tasks for all partners. To shed light on such situation, Prof Lars Uggerh\u00f8j will present the aims of and the scientific positions and theoretical perspectives inspiring practice research. Practice research is constantly transforming itself based on the different contexts, needs and negotiations in joint projects. To avoid every project to start from scratch definitions and very tangible approaches will be presented and unfolded. Challenges in establishing collaborative practice research designs involving researchers, practitioners and service users as stakeholders are also explored and discussed on the basis of experience from practice research projects.\n

\nIn the last ten years there has been a growing interest in developing research that has a special relevance to social work practice. In some ways this is not a new question. But it represents attempts to show how social work research has a special or distinctive character. ‘Practice research’ has interested practitioners and academic faculty in parts of S E Asia, western Europe (especially the Nordic countries and the UK), and in a few areas of the USA. Interest is likely to grow also in Australia and New Zealand. In this year’s lecture I will try to answer three questions. What is meant by ‘practice research’? Can we identify the characteristics of good practice research? In what ways might practitioners respond to these developments?\n

\nSpeaker:<\/strong> Prof Jill Manthorpe, Professor of Social Work and Director of the Social Care Workforce at King’s College London\nLecture Synopsis:<\/strong>
\nThere is huge scope among social workers for embedding research in their practice. To do this, some familiarity with research is essential. This presentation will explain why social work is a ‘natural’ home to research and the need for the profession to be research receptive and research literate. It will offer some examples of practitioner research to illustrate the potential for translating aspirations into the workplace and potentially to improve services to citizens. Three examples of practice research are offered; each with its own challenges and comments on how these were addressed. But the social work profession needs the support of the research community in universities and beyond – this presentation will outline some of the ways in which university social work researchers and educators will need to respond to such changes.\n
