Hao Xueni

Background

Hao Xueni, from China, earned her B.A. in Burmese from Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) in 2021. Following her undergraduate studies, she worked as a Student Counselor at BFSU’s School of Asian and African Studies for two years. She then pursued an M.A. in Burmese Languages and Literatures at BFSU and graduated in 2025. During her time at BFSU, Xueni participated in an exchange programme at Yangon University in Myanmar and conducted field research in Laos and along the China-Myanmar border. She is currently a PhD student in the Comparative Asian Studies programme at NUS.

 

Asian Languages

Hao Xueni is a native Mandarin Chinese speaker, fluent in Burmese, and has a basic knowledge of Thai.

 

Research Interests

Hao Xueni’s research interests centre on Burmese language and literature and socio-cultural studies in Myanmar. Her M.A. research explored the linguistic landscape of Yangon’s Chinatown, focusing on Myanmar’s Chinese community. For her doctoral research, she is focusing on the ethnic governance systems in China and Myanmar. Through policy analysis and field investigation, her work aims to enhance understanding of ethnic governance in multi-ethnic states.
