Douglas Kammen is Associate Professor and Dean’s Chair in the Department of Southeast Asian Studies. He previously taught at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand (1998-2000), Hasanuddin University in Makasssar, Indonesia (2000-2001), the National University of Timor Lorosae (2002-2003) and worked at the East Timor Commission for Reception, Truth and Reconciliation (2003-2004). His research has focused on labour and protest, military politics, and political violence in Indonesia, and on the history and politics of Timor-Leste from the 19th century to the present. He is author of Three Centuries of Violence in East Timor (2015), Independent Timor-Leste: Between Coercion and Consent (2019), co-editor of The Contours of Mass Violence in Indonesia (2012), and co-author of Cina Timor: Baba, Hakka and Cantonese in the Making of East Timor (2019).
