Atmaja Gohain Baruah

Background

Atmaja Gohain Baruah is a joint PhD student at the Comparative Asian Studies Programme at National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Geography Department at King’s College London (KCL). Her research focuses on exploring the connection between mobility and wellbeing in the context of climate and environmental change in the Global South, specifically India and Bangladesh, taking an intersectional approach. She is supervised by Associate Prof Rajesh Rai at NUS and Reader in Environmental Politics Dr Naho Mirumachi at KCL.

In addition to her academic pursuits, Atmaja is associated with the Institute for Security and Development Policy, a Stockholm-based non-profit, non-partisan research and policy organization, as an Associated Research Fellow. Prior to her current role, she has worked with national think tanks and non-profits focusing on strategy-building and resource management within India and globally. During her time at NUS, she held the President’s Graduate Fellowship while conducting her research.

Atmaja Gohain Baruah is a native of Assam, India. She obtained her B.A. Hons in Sociology from Miranda House, Delhi University, followed by an M.A. in East Asian Studies and an M.Phil. in East Asian Studies, both from Delhi University. Her M.Phil at Jawaharlal Nehru University, India, was focused on understanding China’s environmental governance.

Atmaja speaks English, Assamese, and Hindi fluently. She was trained in intermediate Mandarin and Bengali for her research work.

 

Research Interests

Atmaja is interested in issues of political ecology and intersectionality, disaster resilience, climate-related migration including displacement and planned relocation, systems thinking, environmental governance in Asia, and Indo-Pacific relations.
