Syed Farid Alatas, a Malaysian national, is Professor of Sociology at NUS. He taught at the University of Malaya in the Department of Southeast Asian Studies prior to joining NUS in 1992. In the years that he has been teaching at NUS, he has taught a wide range of courses that cover fields such as sociological theory, interpretive methods, sociology of religion, development studies, and the study of Malay and Muslim civilisations. His areas of interest are the sociology of Islam, social theory, religion and reform, intra- and inter-religious dialogue, and the sociology and political economy of knowledge production.
