Students Safety

Preparing for Fieldwork/Field Trip

Undergraduate and graduate students should complete OSHGEN08, Field Research Safety, when performing field trips or collection of samples in the field.
The preparation of risk assessment form before going for the field activity is required.

Graduate Students

Geography Laboratories Access

To get access to the Geo-Lab and Teaching Lab, undergraduate and graduate students need to complete the mandatory online trainings by Office of Risk Management and Compliances (ORMC). The trainings are available in CANVAS.

Online trainings:

Furthermore, students should be brief on existing risk assessments when joining a project, otherwise students should prepare the risk assessment form for their lab activities associated with their research and it  should be approved by the advisor.

Reporting an Accident/Incident

In case of an accident/incident while in the field or in the laboratories, it should be reported via AIMS within 24hrs of the incident.

Review of Safety Documentation

All safety documentation should be reviewed by the Department SHFC members. Please submit the documentation at least a month prior to the field or lab activity.

Preparing for Fieldwork/Field Trip

The safety documentation required for local and overseas fieldwork and field trips include:

  • Event Safety Plan
  • Activity based Risk Assessment Form
  • Risk Acknowledgement consent form
  • Event Participant Sheet
  • Field Research Checklist

All students, TAs, helpers and staff should complete the following online training in in CANVAS: OSHGEN08, Field Research Safety.
Staff, TAs and helpers conducting Risk Assessment should complete OSHGEN07, Risk Management for General Workplaces in CANVAS.

Staff, TAs and helpers should be familiar with the Department’s Fieldwork Safety Management System, available at the Safety Compass SharePoint.

Staff should conduct safety briefing to all participants on the potential hazards/risks, safety considerations and mitigation measures, do's and don'ts etc. at least two weeks prior to the trip.

Laboratory Classes Safety

For lab classes in the Geo-lab /Teaching Lab all students should complete the online trainings in CANVAS:

Staff is responsible to ensure students complete the training before performing the lab activities.

Student Supervision

The supervisor of undergraduate/graduate students is responsible for ensuring that all the required risk assessment forms are completed and approved priory to do any field and laboratory activities. Additionally, the supervisor must ensure that students are adequately briefed and have completed the necessary training.

Preparing for Fieldwork/Field Trip

PIs and Researchers should complete the OSHGEN08, Field Research Safety, when performing field trips or collection of samples in the field. The preparation of risk assessment form before going for the field activity is required.

PI has the responsibility to incorporate additional trainings to address the specific hazards associated with their research environment.
