Minor in GIS

Roy attending the United Nations World Geospatial Information Congress in Deqing, Zhejiang Province, China

There goes the cliché, a picture paints a thousand words. But a map paints a thousand pictures, and there you have lots of information and stories hidden behind a map.

The GIS minor opened doors for me to undertake the Singapore Geospatial Scholarship. Under the scholarship, I worked in two very different public agencies (National Environment Agency and Singapore Land Authority). The contrasting job scope in both agencies equipped me with a range of experience in managing and harnessing GIST to support Singapore’s Smart Nation efforts. Furthermore, I can communicate effectively with different geospatial industry stakeholders and chart Singapore’s geospatial development.

Sin Kang Investigating the carbon sequestration properties of mangroves in Pulau Ubin

As a geographer interested in Earth physical processes, the Geosciences Minor was a natural pick for me. The courses cover how Earth’s physical processes influence the anthropogenic sphere, and vice versa, a highly pertinent perspective in the world today After graduation, I secured a research assistant position on a project that investigated the impacts of urban heat island on outdoor thermal comfort in Singapore. I am glad I took up the Geosciences Minor, as it helped me attain a firm understanding of the subject, thus giving me a slight head start over my peers. ~~ Yik Sin Kang

Leon messing around in the mangroves of Thailand

Geo- (earth) graphy (studies) has always interested me since I bought my first atlas of the world. And maps are an indespensible tool of any geographer who wishes to communicate their knowledge. The minor programme taught me how to harness GIS not only for map production, but also for spatial analyses. With this technical foundation, I chose to focus my studies on global environmental change, starting with mangrove deforestation in my bachelor’s thesis. There are many opportunities provided by the department for research, internships, and development. My advice is to seek them out, work hard, and build your relationships! ~~ Leon Gaw

Ivin enjoying geothermal wonders in Tateyama, Japan

I have since young been fascinated with various unique natural formations and spectacular landscapes like the Seven Wonders of the World, and undertaking a Minor in Geosciences allowed me to learn more about them. A better grounding in the application of science to the understanding of the Earth and its environment is particularly relevant in the contemporary moment in Singapore and elsewhere around the world, with increasing local and global concerns about environmental management and protection. Through the Minor, I have acquired highly-sought-after knowledge not only within the social sciences but also in and for the marketplace. ~~ Ivin Yeo Si Jie

Minor in Urban Studies

Nisa with her Urban Studies friends undertaking research in Little India

My Urban Studies minor provided me with internship opportunities at the National Heritage Board and the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth. The knowledge I gained minor programme also helped me to secure a job with the National Arts Council. Under my current job scope I track COVID-related grants and amend funding frameworks. My understanding of the arts and culture and their importance to creating a more liveable and vibrant city are critical to planning for policy positions within the arts sector. ~~ Kamarunnisa Bte Ismail

I minored in Urban Studies with a Bachelors in Political Science. In my work with the Silver Generation Office, the outreach arm of Agency for Integrated Care (AIC). I often come across urban issues that concern elderly on a day-to-day basis, such as the availability of ramps and grab bars in HDB units. My elderly clients would sometimes share about how they plan for their retirement with the Lease Buyback Scheme and I listen with keen interest thanks to my background in Urban Studies. Doing a minor brings about boundless multi-disciplinary knowledge, so go forth to choose something that makes you curious about the world! ~~ Chang Xue Qi

Minor in Aquatic Ecology

Having enrolled in the Aquatic Ecology minor with minimal experience in research, I was guided by patient and experienced professors who would impart their knowledge to us and provide constructive feedback. Through the minor, I was able to gain and develop applicable skills like critical thinking, which proved to be useful for my current role as a research assistant.
