Amy Phua

Course: Doing Ethnography (2026)
Amy Phua Mei Yen is Postdoctoral Fellow at IPS Social Lab. She completed her PhD at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and holds a Bachelor's degree in Social Science (Sociology Major), a Master's degree in Anthropology and a Master’s of Philosophy degree from the National University of Singapore, the University of Hyderabad and the University of Cambridge respectively.
Having worked in research organizations and obtained post-graduate training, she brings over 10 years of experience in qualitative research methodology and project management. With a robust background in Anthropology, her research expertise lies in qualitative method and ethnography.
She has also lived and conducted ethnographic fieldwork in countries outside of Singapore, particularly in rural and urban India. Her research interests focuses on the intersection of political, cultural and religious identities in urban spaces. Her PhD thesis examines the Sufi community in Hyderabad, India, and their negotiations to claim socio-political spaces within the urban landscape.
