Financial Aid

The main means of financial support for attendance in the IPSA-NUS Methods School are the discounted registration fees for students and participants from academic institutions. In addition, participants can apply for Methods School grants. Various universities, professional association, private and public sector employers, and the Singapore government also provide scholarships, grants, or tax incentives to attend the Methods School.

Methods School Travel Grants

The Methods School, in cooperation with the International Political Science Association, will offer two travel grants in the amount of USD$500 each, per year of the Summer School. The travel grant shall be utilized to offset travel expenses of the qualified participants either from the broader region, but from outside the host country of the Summer School, or from the Global South.

The selection process is highly competitive, and preference is given to self-funded graduate students, who require specialized methodological skills in order to complete their dissertation research.

To apply for a Methods School travel grant, please follow these steps:

  1. Register and pay for a Methods School course.
  1. After having successfully registered, you and your letter of recommendation writer should e-mail the following supporting materials to methods-school@nus.edu.sg under separate cover:
    • Cover letter that explains how participation in the Methods School will contribute towards completion of your dissertation research
    • Curriculum vitae
    • One letter of recommendation from either your most recent academic supervisor or dissertation committee chair.

Please note that we can only process application from registered Methods School participants as the financial aid committee may use an applicant's course selection as a criterion in the selection process. Also, decisions will only be made after the early bird application deadline. As most courses will already be full by then, even applicants who would otherwise qualify for a grant might not be able to attend the Methods School for lack of a place on their favorite course. Therefore, it is essential that you register and pay for a Methods School course before you apply for financial aid.

The deadline for all financial aid applications is Wednesday, May 31, 2023. Late applications cannot be considered. Successful applicants will be notified in by the middle of June 2023.

External Funding

We strongly encourage Methods School participants interested in financial aid to also explore alternative funding opportunities. Past participants received scholarships or support from national and local funding agencies, professional associations, as well as their home institutions. Universities as well as individual research centers, departments, and schools often have special training funds at their disposal and are willing to provide financial assistance, especially when participation in the Methods School is combined with an independent/supervised study project, field research, or a conference presentation in the Asia-Pacific.

These are just a few agencies that provide financial assistance and/or information about funding opportunities:

Singapore Government

Singapore citizens and permanent residents can use SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) funding to attend the Methods School (course reference number: TGS-2015502922). Visit the SSG website for information about the various funding schemes for individuals, such as the SkillsFuture mid-career enhanced subsidy and SkillsFuture Credit, as well as employees, such as the enhanced support for small and medium enterprise (SME) employee training. These schemes cover up to 90% of the Methods School course fees.
