Campus and Beyond

Information for 2024

Methods School participants have access to all the cafeterias, restaurants, and cafes on the NUS campus. Closest to the classrooms is the NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences canteen known as "The Deck". The College of Design and Engineering canteen known as "Techno Edge" and the Faculty of Computing canteen known as "Terrace" are also just a short walk away. The main campus offers many more cafes, and a few fine-dining restaurants (e.g., Privé Grill).

The Deck Techno Edge

In UTown, you can find StarbucksSubway, two food courts – Fine Food and Flavours – and a variety of casual internationalItalianJapaneseKorean, and other restaurants.

In addition to the eateries on campus, there are several budget-friendly eating options close to campus along Clementi Road, West Coast Road (West Coast Market Square and West Coast Plaza), and around the Kent Ridge (One@KentRidge and Savourword) and Clementi (Clementi Market & Food Centre and Clementi Mall) MRT stations. If you want to venture beyond the campus and its immediate neighborhood, just ask a local member of the Methods School team for suggestions on where to go for the best tastes of Singapore and how to get there.

All campus apartments come equipped with a basic kitchen (fridge, microwave, but no kitchenware) should you prefer to prepare your own meals. There are a convenience store and small supermarket in UTown and several larger supermarkets (Cold StorageSheng Siong, and FairPrice) close to campus. In addition, there are two covered market halls nearby that specialize in fresh fruits and other perishable items.

If you prefer, you can also have your food delivered to you by restaurants (e.g., McDonald's) or services like Deliveroo and Foodpanda.

Computing

Participants can connect their WiFi-enabled laptops, smart phones, tablet computers, etc. to the NUS_Guest, Wireless@SG, and eduroam wireless networks and access the internet anywhere in UTown as well as on NUS' main campus.

Most Methods School courses require the use of computers for hands-on training. Where necessary, the Methods School provides temporary licenses for the required software packages (e.g., Stata, z-Tree) so that participants can install and use the software on their own computers.

Reading

We strongly encourage you to buy the Core Readings for your respective course before the start of the Methods School and to bring them with you to Singapore. Several of the core readings are available as eBooks from Amazon's Kindle store.

Shopping

Singapore is the ultimate shopping destination in the Asia-Pacific. In other words, there are endless opportunities for you to make good use of your credit card. Most of the 'real' shopping happens in the world-famous shopping malls along Orchard Road (ION, Ngee Ann City, Paragon, Mandarin Gallery, and many, many more), at Harbour Front (Vivo City), and Marina Bay (Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands), but there are countless malls (e.g., Suntec City, Star Vista, Jurong Point, Jem, and Bugis Junction) and specialized shopping centers (e.g., Mustafa) that cater to every budget and taste all over Singapore.

Entertainment

You are here to study research methods! ... but there will be enough time for you to participate in talks, info sessions, and social activities organized by the Methods School and to explore Singapore on your own. For inspiration on what to see and do while in Singapore, visit this, this, this, or this website, look for event tickets at SISTIC, or just ask a local member of the Methods School team.

Miscellaneous

There are ATMs, a health center and hospital, a hair salon, art and natural history museums, and an arts center on the NUS campus.

The National University of Singapore has a strict non-smoking policy – indoors and outdoors!
