Elvin Xing is a Research Fellow at the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) Social Lab, where he contributes to qualitative research on social dynamics and community interactions. He completed his PhD in Anthropology at the Australian National University and brings a wealth of academic and professional experience to his role. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts (Social Science) from the National University of Singapore, an MA in Anthropology from the University of Hyderabad, and an MPhil in Social Anthropology from the University of Cambridge.

With over a decade of experience in qualitative research methodology and data analysis, Elvin has honed his expertise through diverse professional roles, including as a Crime Analyst with the Singapore Police Force and completing teaching stints at the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University. A seasoned ethnographer, he has conducted immersive fieldwork in both rural and urban India, enriching his understanding of cultural, political, and religious identities across varied social contexts.

Elvin’s research focuses on identity politics, exploring how political, cultural, and religious identities intersect and diverge within different social and political landscapes. His current work examines the impact of urban spaces on intercommunity interactions, with an emphasis on fostering social cohesion and integration. Through his training in qualitative research and ethnography, Elvin seeks to examine grounded perspectives and illuminate the nuanced ways in which individuals and communities navigate and interact within diverse and evolving contexts.
