M. Max Bergman is Professor of Social Research and Methodology at the University of Basel, Switzerland. He is a graduate of the University of California, has a MA from the University of Geneva, and earned his PhD at the University of Cambridge. He chairs the World Sustainability Forum and is a member of the Research Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Swiss National Commission for UNESCO, and the United Nation's Sustainable Development Solutions Network initiative. He previously was Head of Research and Methodology at the Swiss Information and Data Archive Service for the Social Sciences and co-directed the South African Social Sciences Research Methodology Winter School. He also was the editor of the Swiss Journal of Sociology and co-editor of the Journal of Mixed Methods Research. His research focuses on sustainability, particularly the interdependence of society, business, and government in a globalized world, and he is developing new research methods for policy-relevant and change-oriented research related to societal sustainability. He has previously taught at the IPSA Summer School in São Paulo, the ECPR Summer School in Ljubljana and Winter School in Vienna, and the Essex Summer School in Social Science Data Analysis, the African Doctoral Academy, and the Swiss Summer School in Social Science Methodology.
