Dr Azhar Ibrahim Alwee on Encouraging the Use of Malay

28 September 2026

Dr Azhar Ibrahim Alwee, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Malay Studies, NUS, was recently featured in Berita Harian in a discussion on encouraging the use of the Malay language, particularly among younger speakers who may lack confidence in their proficiency.

Drawing on his experiences with students, Dr Azhar highlighted the importance of creating a supportive environment where individuals feel comfortable using Malay even when their command of the language is not yet perfect. With time, encouragement and opportunities to practise, learners can develop greater confidence and proficiency.

He also encouraged the community to view Malay as more than a means of communication, describing proficiency in the language as a form of “cultural capital” that provides access to knowledge, literature and communities across the wider region. He noted that those proficient in both Malay and English can also serve as cultural intermediaries, bringing knowledge and ideas across linguistic communities.

Dr Azhar further emphasised that sustaining the use of Malay is a shared responsibility involving not only schools, but also families, friends, community organisations and the media.
