Syed Hussein Alatas and Decolonising the Curriculum
SYNOPSIS
In recent years, there have been growing calls to decolonise the curriculum. This talk will explore this debate and go on to argue that Syed Hussein Alatas is a worthy candidate for greater inclusion in the syllabi of multiple disciplines. It will achieve this by emphasising some of the enduring aspects of SH Alatas' work which remain poignant today. More specifically, this talk will explore the specific relevance of SH Alatas for the disciplines of sociology and criminology. Finally, a critique of efforts to decolonise the curriculum will be offered so as to recognise that such undertakings are not without their limitations. This talk is partly informed by the following publication: Moosavi, L. (2019). Decolonising Criminology: Syed Hussein Alatas on Crimes of the Powerful. Critical Criminology. 27 (2): 229-242.
