[1-Day Short Course] Language and Literacy in the Malay World
About the course
Pengantar Kursus: Bahasa Melayu
This course focuses on the importance of language and critical literacy in the formation of ideas, thought and values in the socio-historical setting of Malay-Indonesian societies. The language development of the region reflects not only the various cultural contacts, but also the conscious planning on the part of the language planners. But in language also encapsulate the politics of or the contestation of ideas. Here the critical literacy approach could best serve to unpack these language issues, and how it reflects the intellectual undercurrent.
In approaching this topic, we shall focus on three main areas
- The ideas of language as put forth by the region's leading linguists and intellectuals.
- The thematic analyses on various language issues that emerged in various contexts during the post-independent period. For example, the issues on the using of Jawi or Romanised scripts, and the political correctness and distortion of meaning.
- The roles of institutional organisation in the promotion of language and literacy, including its impediments and challenges
This course should be relevant to teachers, journalists, editors and language enthusiasts. It should provide a good mapping on comprehending language discourse from the perspective of history and society. Most importantly the tools of critical literacy (e.g. a Freirean version) will be employed to delineate how critical concepts could be applied in reading and understand a language phenomenon.
