[1-Day Short Course] Literature and Humanistic Knowledge
About the course
This course introduces the scope of Malay literature studies that could encompasses the critical appreciation of ideas, intellectualism and aestheticism. The topics of humanism and realism will be discussed alongside the social and cultural meanings of aesthetic expressions. A Literature course like this could also enhance language learning apart from providing exposure to literary discourse.
In secondary schools and junior colleges, Malay literature is offered as a subject. Teacher- training at NIE include the pedagogy of literature. The in-service for teachers primarily focuses on language pedagogy, curriculum and assessment, but it is not offered regularly as the emphasis is on language studies.
Most importantly the skills of reading literary via the approach of critical literacy alongside the understanding of sociological dynamics of poetics and politics in creative works will be provided.
By highlighting of skills of reading literature, the focus will be on:
- The primacy of the author’s intent, values and ideological affiliation
- The key words as encapsulated in the text and unravelling its meanings
- Drawing the humanistic tropes in the text and linking to its significance to society and the ideational realms
These could be achieved if the course appreciates aspects of critical literacy, sociological analysis and cultural studies as part of its teaching and learning approach.

Dr Azhar Ibrahim ialah Pensyarah Kanan di Jabatan Pengajian Melayu, Universiti Nasional Singapura (NUS). Beliau mengajar kesusasteraan Melayu klasik, termasuk sastera Melayu moden dan Indonesia, serta wacana pembangunan. Antara buku beliau yang pernah terbit adalah: Memikir-ulang Tradisi untuk Pembaharuan (2018), Historical Imagination and Cultural Responses to Colonialism and Nationalism: A Critical Malay(sian) Perspective (2017), Menyanggah Belenggu Kerancuan Fikiran Masakini (2016), Utopia Masyarakat Lambak (2015), Cendekiawan Melayu Penyuluh Emansipasi (2014), Bahasa dan Tantangan Intelektualisme (2014) Contemporary Islamic Discourse in the Malay-Indonesia World ( 2014) dan Narrating Presence: Awakening from Cultural Amnesia. (2014).
Dr Azhar Ibrahim is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Malay Studies, National University of Singapore (NUS). He teaches Malay-Indonesian literature and ideologies of development at the Department. His research interest includes sociology of literature, critical literacy, and the Malay-Indonesian intellectual development. Amongst his published works are: Emancipated Education (2020), Historical Imagination and Cultural Responses to Colonialism and Nationalism: A Critical Malay(sian) Perspective (2017), Contemporary Islamic Discourse in the Malay-Indonesia World (2014) and Narrating Presence: Awakening from Cultural Amnesia. (2014).
