Department Scholarships

The Department is pleased to announce the establishment of two scholarships - the Malay Studies Undergraduate Scholarship and the Malay Studies Graduate Scholarship. The Scholarships seek to recognise, support and nurture well-deserving, academically talented Singaporeans who are keen to pursue Malay Studies at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The scholarships are created from endowed gifts made by an FASS alumni philanthropist. Recipients for both awards are selected on the basis of their academic achievements.

The Malay Studies Undergraduate Scholarship will be awarded to Year 3 student/s majoring in Malay Studies. The scholarship will take effect in Academic Year 2022/2023.

Award Criteria

  1. The Scholarship is open to third-year undergraduate Singaporean students majoring in Malay Studies and have obtained an overall GPA of at least 3.5 in the BA Hons Year 1 and Year 2 examinations.
  2. Only Singapore citizens who are born in Singapore and/or Singaporean-at-birth will be eligible. Male applicants who are Singapore citizens must have completed full-time National Service. Applicants are required to submit a copy of the Singapore birth certificate and a copy of NS certificate to the Department, where applicable.
  3. Applicants should possess a high level of bilingual (Malay/English) proficiency.
  4. Award recipients should not be in receipt of any other scholarship or bursary or free aid without the consent of the Scholarship’s administrator and the other award’s administrator.
  5. The number of scholarships awarded in each academic year may vary. Each award is a one-time Scholarship valued at up to S$12,000 each, tenable for one year only. The Scholarship is non-renewable. The award will be disbursed in two tranches of up to S$6,000 each at the beginning of each semester, in the year of award.
  6. The Head of Department may adjust the value of the Scholarship in such a manner as he/she deems fit, subject to sufficiency of funds and/or available income and the University’s prevailing spending policies.
  7. Remaining funds, if any, may be awarded towards one (1) scholarship of up to S$12,000 to a student admitted into the MA or PhD research programme (full-time) in each academic year. The award criteria for the NUS Malay Studies Graduate Scholarship will apply.
  8. The Department Scholarship Selection Committee, comprising the Head (Committee Chair) or nominee and a senior faculty member from the Department of Malay Studies will shortlist, interview and award the Scholarship.
  9. The scholarship is bond-free but recipients are expected to take on the role of student ambassadors or any other roles when called upon to do so by the Department of Malay Studies.
  10. No Scholarship will be awarded unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.

The Malay Studies Graduate Scholarship will be awarded to an MA or PhD by research programme (full-time) at the Department of Malay Studies. The scholarship will take effect in Academic Year 2022/2023.

Award Criteria & Terms for NUS Malay Studies Graduate Scholarship

  1. Only students who are Singapore citizens born in Singapore and/or are Singaporean-at‐birth (or naturalised Singapore citizens who were born in or were at birth a citizen of an ASEAN country), or students who are ASEAN citizens born in or be at birth a citizen of an ASEAN country will be eligible. Male applicants who are Singapore citizens must have completed full-time National Service.
  2. Applicants should possess a high level of proficiency in both Malay/Bahasa Indonesia and English.
  3. The Scholarship recipient must have been successfully admitted into the MA or PhD by research programme (full-time) at the Department of Malay Studies, NUS and may apply for the scholarship at any point during the candidature.
  4. The Scholarship will be awarded based on academic performance. Applicants must have obtained a GPA (Grade Point Average) of at least 4.0 (or equivalent) in their BA or BA Honours in Malay Studies and/or other relevant disciplines.
  5. Financial need (based on indicators such as family per capita income indicator) will be the deciding factor for breaking ties.
  6. Students holding full scholarships from NUS/non-NUS organisations covering tuition fee and stipend are not eligible for the NUS Malay Studies Graduate Scholarship. Students who are granted the Tuition Fee Allowance and/or appointed under the Graduate Tutor Assistant or Graduate Researcher Administrative Assistant schemes are eligible for the Scholarship. Subject to consent from the awarding Committee, students awarded the NUS Malay Studies Graduate Scholarship are allowed to hold other bursaries/awards from non-NUS organisations.
  7. The Scholarship recipient’s research must be related to any aspect of Malay society and institutions. Research on Malay culture in Southeast Asia is encouraged.
  8. The one-time Scholarship is valued at up to $12,000 and tenable for one year only. The Scholarship is non-renewable. Up to two (2) Scholarship may be awarded in any given year subject to available funding.  The award will be disbursed in two tranches of up to S$6,000 each at the beginning of the semester.

Faculty Bursary

In 2018, the Annie Tan (Mrs Wan Boo Sow) Bursary was established with the purpose of providing bursaries for undergraduates at the Department of Chinese Studies, Department of Malay Studies and Department of Southeast Asian Studies. The bursary will support one new student majoring in Chinese Studies, Malay Studies or Southeast Asian Studies in each academic year.

The award of the undergraduate bursary will commence in AY2019/2020.

Application Period
Apply by the end April for the following academic year in August.

Value of Award
The bursary is valued at $5000 per academic year. The bursary is tenable for the remaining duration of the recipients' respective undergraduate course (up to 4 years for abovementioned major read as honours major and up to 3 year for abovementioned major read as non-honours major)subject to annual review that the recipient continues to meet the eligibility requirements and other criteria for the award of the bursary. For continuation of the bursary, recipient’s must remain in the same major for which the bursary was awarded.

Eligibility

  • Only students who have applied for NUS Donated Bursaries at the Office of Financial Aid will be considered for this award. Applicants must meet the University’s financial aid criteria at the point of application and renewal.
  • The bursary is open to students in any year of undergraduate study majoring in Chinese Studies/Chinese Language, Malay Studies or Southeast Asian Studies.
  • Only Singapore born citizens will be eligible for this bursary. Successful applicants are required to submit a copy of their Birth Certificate.
  • Male applicants must have completed full time National Service. Successful applicants are required to submit a copy of their NS Certificate.
  • Candidates must have bilingual proficiency in the English Language and their respective official Mother Tongue Language.
  • The main selection criteria will be financial needs based on indicators such as family per capita income.
  • Awardees must not concurrently hold any other awards such as scholarships, grants, bursaries or free aid, without the prior approval of the Selection Committee as well as the respective awarding bodies.

Application Process
Student are required to complete the online form at the Undergraduate Financial Aid Portal. Students who apply for this bursary will be considered for all other bursaries available at Office of Financial Aid during the same semester.

Upon Successful Application
Only successful applicants will be notified by email.

The Acceptance Form together with supporting documents must be submitted to FASS Dean’s Office (AS7 Level 5), by the deadline provided.
