Welcome

Welcome Message from the Head of Department

First established in 1967, the Malay Studies Department at NUS has distinguished itself as an institution providing strong intellectual awareness of problems of relevance within a globalized Malay World. The problem-centric, multi-disciplinary approach on theories and concepts from Western, Asian, and Other intellectual traditions is one of the distinguishing features of the Department. The Department also maintains strong links with the local community in terms of policy studies, public intellectual engagement and social service. Research and teaching at the Department will continue to focus on the fields of culture, religion, history, politics, socio-economics, social institutions and literary traditions of the Malay World, and the larger Muslim and Asian spheres of cross-border contacts and inter-connections. All these will distinguish the unique features of the Malay Studies Department in comparison to other Departments at the FASS. Students at undergraduate and graduate levels seeking to effectively chart their intellectual journey and career-preparation pathways are warmly and keenly welcomed into the folds of the Department of Malay Studies. We share your passion for learning, doing, creating and changing – and would like to be part of this.
