Immersed in the World of Pencak Silat Bawean Dheun: SE3233 Students Experience Martial Arts Mastery!
March 20, 2024
Students in SE3233: Martial Arts in Southeast Asia were immersed in the world of Pencak Silat Bawean Dheun today! Dr. Effendy invited this thriving Singaporean silat group to Utown Dance Atelier 2, where they shared their passion and expertise in this unique martial art form. We were all honored to have Mr. Farid, his wife Lya Ruslan, their children, and the legendary Bawean sword and martial arts master, Mr. Abdullah Bari (Pak Dollah), as instructors. Beyond observation, students actively participated in a hands-on learning experience. They understood further the rich history and cultural significance of Pencak Silat Bawean Dheun. Under the watchful guidance of dedicated instructors, students even practiced wielding the deadly golok (machete) and the awesome pedang Bawean (Bawean sword). The session explored the art of self-defense using everyday items like umbrellas and sarongs, all while moving to the pulsating rhythm of live traditional drums and gongs! SE3233 goes beyond physical skills. Students discovered the core values of humility, courage, and discipline that underpin this martial art. These values serve as cornerstones for personal growth, both within the practice of silat and beyond.
