Janger: The Meditation

🎭 Janger: The Meditation

Get ready for an unforgettable night of rhythm, movement, and storytelling. Janger: The Meditation is a captivating cultural performance brought to life by students from NUS’s Department of Southeast Asian Studies (SE2224) in collaboration with talented dancers and musicians from Kaki Bebek Haus (Bali) and Eka Suwara Santhi (Singapore).

Rooted in Balinese tradition, Janger is a one-of-a-kind performance art that blends dance, song, and music into an energetic celebration of community and creativity. While its origins are mysterious, Janger has been a beloved part of Bali’s cultural heartbeat since the early 1900s — known for its vibrant moves, catchy tunes, and dynamic storytelling.

In Janger: The Meditation, the ensemble performs a classical form known as Janger Melampahan, weaving narrative theater with rich cultural expression. The story, drawn from the Mahabharata, follows Arjuna, the noble prince of the Pandawa clan, as he retreats into the forest to meditate. Tested by the god Siwa, Arjuna’s focus and calm are pushed to their limits — but his perseverance earns him a divine reward: a powerful magic arrow.
