General Independent Study Requirements

All students on the Semester-in-SEA exchange programme are required to read two (2) Independent Study courses as follows:

Course Pre-requisites
SE2660 Students should have:

  • completed a minimum of 12 Units in Southeast Asian Studies; and
  • declared Southeast Asian Studies as their Major
  • read or waived from: LAB 1201 & LAB 2201; LAT 1201 & LAT 2201; or LAV 1201 & LAV 2201
SE3660 Students should have:

  • completed a minimum of 24 Units in Southeast Asian Studies; and
  • declared Southeast Asian Studies as their Major
  • read or waived from: LAB 1201 & LAB 2201; LAT 1201 & LAT 2201; or LAV 1201 & LAV 2201

 

LOCAL LANGUAGE REFERENCE

SE2660 Readings will be specific to each student. However, 20% of readings must be in a relevant Southeast Asian language.
SE3660 Readings will be specific to each student. However, 40% of readings must be in a relevant Southeast Asian language.

 

Guidelines for Students

You will have a main supervisor from the Department of Southeast Asian Studies for each Independent Study who, together with yourself, will work out a research proposal prior to your departure for exchange. Your research proposal must include the following:

  • Research objectives
  • Research protocol or methodology
  • Implementation plan and timeline
  • Key readings
  • Interview/survey questions (if applicable)
  • DERC-PISCF (if applicable)

Your main supervisor and you will also have to work out a schedule for progress reports from you throughout your semester at your Partner University. In general, consultation with main supervisor should be at least 2 hours a week.

The research proposal must be submitted to the Department SEP administrator together with a signed copy of the Application Form signed by both your supervisor and yourself.

You will be assigned an appropriate field supervisor at your Partner University. You must have at least 4 hours of consultation/supervision with your field supervisor(s) while at your Partner University.

At the end of the semester, each student must submit a final project report (maximum 5000 words) and journal to the Department of Southeast Asian Studies.

Assessment

Evaluation is based on 100% Continuous Assessment and details of assessment must be worked out between your main supervisor and yourself prior to seeking departmental approval. Your main supervisor will be responsible for your final grade.
