Research Interests:

1. Educational  research topics

(i) Pedagogical Research --  Topics include - Innovative approaches to T&L, Student-centred T&L that focuses on addressing diversity and lifelong skills using a multi- and inter-disciplinary approach

(ii). Research on International and Comparative Education:  Major topic: Internationalising Higher Education in Asia Pacific -- International student mobilities, Dealing with diversity, Integrating domestic and international  students, Internationalisation of the curriculum, Government and university responses to internationalisation, multi- and inter-disciplinary analysis of international education, competitiveness of international education

2. Economics-based research topics

(i). Economic development issues with reference to Asia: Topics include - Growth, development and crisis, rural and agricultural development, industrialisation, financial markets and institutions, international trade and policies, foreign direct investments, economic stabilization policies and reforms, migration and education, social and economic dimensions of ICT

(ii). Regionalism and Multilateralism: Topics include - ASEAN economic integration (intra-ASEAN economic relations, and ASEAN economic relations with Japan, Europe, U.S. China, Korea and Australia), ASEAN and the WTO, APEC, ASEM, Impact on ASEAN economies and societies

With an engineering degree from the Philippines, Teofilo Daquila commenced his graduate studies in economics at the University of the Philippines and obtained his MA degree from the Katholieke Universiteit te Leuven in 1983. He left Belgium in June 1984 to study at the Australian National University and obtained his PhD degree in economics in July 1988. After a 3-month stint at ISEAS, he joined the NUS Department of Economics and Statistics from Aug 1988 to May 1993. He moved to Australia with his family in June 1993 and taught economics courses at Deakin University and the University of Melbourne. For family reasons, he moved back to Singapore in Dec 1995 and joined the Department of Southeast Asian Studies. He had visiting appointments at El Colegio de Mexico, George Washington University, Chulalongkorn University, Nordic Institute of Asian Studies, Ludwig-Maximilians Universitat Muchen, the Australian National University, and Korea University, among others.

He was appointed Member of the Singapore’s Ministry of Education Syllabus Development Committee for “A” Level History from 2013-2015. He was also appointed Fellow of the NUS Teaching Academy (2011-2020), member of the NUS General Education Committee (2011-2017), member of the NUS Honour Roll (2012-2017) after having won the NUS Annual Teaching Excellence Award at least three times (AY2003/04, AY2007/08, AY2008/09, AY2009/10). He received a number of awards including the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Teaching Excellence Award (AY2004/05, AY2010/11, AY2014-15, AY2015/16), Best Conference Presenter Award (London, 2004), the ASEAN University Network - Korea Association of SE Asian Studies joint academic fellowship award (2004), Centennial Outstanding Alumni Award in Education (Philippines, 2007), and the Centennial Plaque of Recognition in Education (Philippines, 2018). For AY2021/22, he has been appointed member of the NUS University Teaching Excellence Committee (UTEC).

As part of his outreach activities, he has been invited as a guest lecturer, a resource person, and a mentor in secondary schools, junior colleges, and polytechnic: these include the Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), Nanyang Girls' High School, Raffles Girls' School (Secondary), Raffles Institution (Secondary), Raffles Institution (Junior College), and Nanyang Polytechnic.
