New Books to Guide Charities in Adapting to Changing Needs
April 28, 2019

The Centre for Social Development Asia (CSDA) from NUS Department of Social Work has recently launched two sets of books meant to guide charities amidst the changing needs of the community. These publications were in collaboration with the Charity Council and the Chartered Institute of Mangement Accountants. They feature insights from academics, accountants, and leaders from non-profit organisations on areas such as capacity- and capability-building, and best financial practices.
Associate Professor Sushilan Vasoo (NUS Department of Social Work), who is also CSDA chairman, said that the first set of books – Doing Good in Singapore Parts 1 and 2 – seeks to further discussion on the charity sector’s future-readiness and share ideas on capacity-building and sustainable practices in developing social and human capital. Augmenting the collection is a second set of books – Accounting and Finance Handbooks for Charities – which cover topics such as budgeting, accounting, and cashflow management. These will act as guidebooks to help charities better manage their financial operations and ensure greater transparency and accountability to stakeholders.
Together, these resources hope to enable charities, big and small, to remain relevant in the changing landscape. According to Social and Family Development Minister Desmond Lee, they help lay the foundations for Singapore’s social sector to thrive and adapt to the evolving needs of Singapore’s society.
