How can we battle climate change?

During The Straits Times’ recent Global Outlook forum, a panel of four experts discussed the costs and consequences of global warming and called for collective efforts to create fast, widespread, and revolutionary change. One of the panelists, Assistant Professor Winston Chow (NUS Geography) opined that massive efforts are required to restrict the rise of global temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels – the standard set under the landmark Paris Agreement. Whilst Dr Chow lamented that these efforts should already have been initiated, he assured the audience that it’s not too late to take the first step today. It is time to call for societal, political and economic interventions to battle climate change. Specific initiatives and interventions are being discussed at the 24th Conference of the Parties (COP24) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Poland. In response to a question on whether the world is doomed, Dr Chow remarked that given current national and international efforts, there are still reasons for optimism.
