China in the Modern World Research Group

Brochure Final 1

Introduction

China in the Modern World Research Group in the Department of Chinese Studies has been set up with the department's support to promote research on Chinese history from the mid-nineteenth century to the end of the twentieth century. The research group is particularly interested in fostering scholarly exchanges and collaborative works that address China’s modern transformations from global, transnational, and comparative perspectives. While the research group centres on history, we welcome scholarly collaboration across literature, philosophy, linguistics, translation, cultural studies, and the social sciences.

We welcome faculty and graduate students from the Department of Chinese Studies and the wider NUS community interested in modern and contemporary Chinese history to join us. The group pledges to facilitate intellectual dialogue with scholars and scholarly communities worldwide with a shared interest in understanding modern and contemporary China. The research group seeks to establish the Chinese Studies Department as a leading centre of research and exchange on modern and contemporary Chinese history through seminars, workshops, conferences, and informal discussions.

Our activities include:

  1. Organise internal discussions featuring faculty and student presentations of current research, ongoing manuscripts, and recent publications.
  2. Host public or in-house talks and guest lectures by invited speakers and academic visitors.
  3. Organise workshops, seminars, and international conferences with academic partners.
  4. Help with the publication of group projects or conference proceedings.
