Programme Description

In Mixed Methods Research, researchers collects, analyzes, and integrates both qualitative and quantitative data within a single study or longitudinal program of inquiry. This workshop will take participants through the various stages of the research process, the associated methods and decisions to be taken in the context of mixed methods research.

Course Date
6/5/2026 - 7/5/2026

Venue
NUS Kent Ridge Campus (AS8)

Trainer
A/Prof Mu Zheng

Programme Description

At the end of the course, participants will be able to understand how to test ideas of social scientific research questions with appropriate statistical methods, know how to use a very popular software (i.e., Stata) to conduct statistical analyses and interpret the results, and apply statistical models to explain social phenomena, inform public policies and address real-world problems.

Course Date
11/5/2026 - 12/5/2026

Venue
NUS Kent Ridge Campus (AS8)

Trainer
Dr Senhu Wang

Programme Description

Structural equation modeling (SEM) is a technique to test hypothesized models with observed and latent variables. It encompasses many techniques, such as linear regression, multivariate regression, and factor analysis as special cases. This course provides a practical introduction of structural equation modeling using the open source R statistical platform.

Course Date
13/5/2026 - 14/5/2026

Venue
NUS Kent Ridge Campus (AS8)

Trainer
Prof Mike Cheung

Programme Description

This course will introduce participants to the basics of multivariate regression analysis. It will cover topics such as OLS regression, binary logistic regression, and multinomial logistic regression. In addition, it will discuss the difference between randomized controlled experiments and observational studies. The course will also discuss a range of statistical relationships common in the social sciences---spuriousness, mediator, partial explanation, suppression, and interaction. The course uses SPSS.

Course Date
18/5/2026 - 19/5/2026

Venue
NUS Kent Ridge Campus (AS8)

Trainer
A/Prof Vincent Chua

Programme Description

This course introduces tools for conducting empirical analysis of longitudinal data: data collected from the same entities at different points in time. Such data is commonly seen in health and social sciences research.

Course Date
6/7/2026 - 7/7/2026

Venue
NUS Kent Ridge Campus (AS8)

Trainer
Dr Denis Tkachenko

Programme Description

In survey research, the questionnaire, together with sampling, is the instrument that could make or break a research project. It needs to be sharp and effective, comprising reliable and valid indices or scales that could produce data which accurately capture the "real world" out there. It must also be paired with a representive sample to ensure that the data collected do not turn out to be a worthless heap of numbers. This course aims to share the essential "first principles" of questionnaire construction and sampling design. It will also offer tips and tricks of the trade that could enhance the interviewing experience, and thereby response rates, and contribute to producing quality data constituting the foundation of solid research or policy papers.

Course Date
5/8/2026
