Introduction

Dear Interested Learners of Social Science Research Methods,

Welcome to the CFPR training program! We are in an evidence-based research centre for the study of population and family issues within Singapore and the region. The Centre is housed in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

We have conducted the training program since 2015, and have trained over 1,350 participants since, from across the public and private sectors in Singapore, including NGOs. Our teaching team is made up of award-winning instructors from NUS, with decades of experience teaching social science research methods. The program hosts several 1- to 2-day short courses that cover a wide range of topics from basic skills in quantitative and qualitative analyses to advanced courses in business analytics. We teach by incorporating theory and practice and are active users of statistical software such as SPSS, STATA and R. All of our courses have received consistently high ratings and favorable evaluations. Social science research methods are diverse in nature with rich complementarities in practice. Our program encompasses all mainstream and leading-edge social science research methods. It encourages interdisciplinarity through the interaction of qualitative and quantitative research methods.

Given that Singapore's society is transforming rapidly, we understand the importance of skills upgrading in preparation for evolving careers and a globally changing labor market landscape. Social science research methods are indeed fundamental to many sectors in Singapore such as media, government policymaking, market research, business analytics, and many more. Our program is designed to meet the demand for skills development and lifelong learning. The program caters to specific learning needs at different levels. It features a wide range of training workshops, comprising in total some 40 research methods courses organized into a comprehensive three-tiered curriculum: basic, intermediate and advanced.

You will find in CFPR a feasible learning pathway. All training is conducted as small-sized workshops, taught by award-winning NUS instructors, through hands-on sessions using real-world examples. The teaching is intensive, interactive, effective, and inspiring. Our courses are reaching a wide audience in an effective and relatable way.

For those who are keen to learn, refresh, expand and upgrade their skills in social research, social data analytics, and evidence-based planning, this program is designed especially for you. We welcome you to go through this brochure for more information about our program offerings. We believe our carefully-designed program will greatly facilitate your learning journey towards the mastery of social science research methods and skills.
