Having just graduated a few months ago as a Sociology major, I look back on my four years at NUS with much fondness. My academic journey began with a background in business, having earned a diploma in the field during my polytechnic years. Despite this, I’ve always harboured a deep curiosity for topics related to the arts and humanities.

After graduating from polytechnic, I faced a pivotal decision for my university major: to follow a conventional path by returning to my business roots or to venture into the unknown by pursuing my passion for the humanities. In the end, I embraced the opportunity and chose the latter, knowing that I wouldn’t be able to receive the same level of exposure and knowledge anywhere else except university. During my first year, I was still undecided about my major. I explored a wide array of introductory modules, ranging from psychology to political science to philosophy. Yet, none called out to me as much as sociology.

It allowed me to delve into critical topics such as race, gender, and social class, as well as more niche subjects like sports, violence, and emotions. It taught me to think critically and from multiple perspectives, enhancing my ability to analyse and understand the world in a nuanced and comprehensive way. Choosing to pursue sociology was a significant shift, and many questioned my decision. However, the prospect of living with a perpetual 'what if' was far more daunting than the challenge of adapting to a new discipline. In hindsight, I’m happy that I took the leap to pursue what was calling out to me. It has been one of my greatest pleasures studying something that has brought me so much joy, awe and knowledge in the last four years of my life.

I am excited to apply the skills and insights this discipline has provided me, into the next phase of my life. Here’s to adulting!
