Abstract

This project is funded by the Korean National Research Foundation, in collaboration with the Institute for Social Development and Policy Research at Seoul National University (SNU). The objective is to study the patterns and determinants of well-being across eight Asian and Southeast Asian societies: Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand.

The project PI is Dr Dong-Kyun Im from Seoul National University (PhD Harvard 2014).
The Singapore collaborator is A/P Vincent Chua from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the National University of Singapore. Further objectives include a study of how varieties of contextual conditions (e.g., rate of unemployment, economic growth, and 44 other contextual-level indicators) have affected well-being across the eight societies.

In addition, using survey data from these eight societies, the project also aims to study how gender relations, in the form of gender ideology-practice mismatches, have affected the life satisfaction of professional women in these societies, set against the backdrop of contextual variations in gender progressiveness.
