VIETNAMESE PROGRAMME

Being the national language of Vietnam, Vietnamese is spoken by an entire population of 95 million people in the country, and by more than 4 million ethnically Vietnamese who are currently living in North America, Europe, Australia and Asia. Its pronunciation rests on a six-tone foundation and its official written script follows a Romanized system. Knowing the language is advantageous to fostering an understanding of the Vietnamese culture, and is an advantage in doing business in the country.
Relations between Singapore and Vietnam have grown from strength to strength since the two countries established bilateral diplomatic relations. The expansion of trade and business contacts between Singapore and Vietnam over the years has been tremendously increasing over the years. As of June 2013, Singapore ranked as the second largest foreign investor in Vietnam with registered cumulative investments of US$28.3 billion in 1,164 projects. The five Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Parks (VSIPs) in Binh Duong, Hai Phong, Bac Ninh and Quang Ngai are concrete symbols of the close cooperation between the two countries.

Bilateral trade in 2012 reached US$15.8 billion. Both countries have elevated relations to that of a Strategic Partnership in 2013 to mark the 40th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Vietnam. The Strategic Partnership agreement will reinforce the existing links between Singapore and Vietnam, and open up new directions for cooperation in various areas, including cooperation in education, training, finance, defense, and security. The knowledge of Vietnamese language is considered to be a distinct advantage in almost every profession, and those who master the language are in demand in almost all sectors. Knowing Vietnamese will definitely get you ahead in a thriving economy and you will set yourself apart in the business world.

LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR VIETNAMESE LANGUAGE

The Vietnamese Language courses are designed and structured for the busy working professional who aspires to attain language mastery in the Vietnamese Language.
Competencies achieved through attending the progressive courses are useful to building confidence so as to enable the individual to speak, understand and read basic syntax in the newly-acquired language focus.
Courses are designed in a structured and coherent manner, positioned from an adult perspective so that they closely address and match the adults’ learner’s quest for continuing education.

Upon successful completion of Vietnamese 3, you will be able to read, write and comprehend texts of moderate complexity and to express yourself within a variety of daily life situations.

Course Description
This course is designed to teach students the basics of Vietnamese Language which includes Vietnamese script, basic grammatical concepts, and basic writing, reading and conversation skills.

5. Family relation

Learning Outcome
By the end of this course, learners should be able to:
(1) identify the 6 different tones and the writing system of the Vietnamese language;
(2) acquire a sound knowledge of the grammatical structures and how to use them appropriately for different communicative situations such as how to greet people appropriately according to their age; enquire about one’s nationality as well as their work and workplaces; and carry out a casual conversation about one’s family.
(3) acquire a general understanding of the cultures of Vietnam, the socio-linguistic aspects of the language and to acquire cross-cultural communication skills.
