The Thai Programme aims to develop language proficiency and communicative structures using an integrated approach. Participants will acquire basic language and communication skills through participation in authentic communicative tasks. Through the exposure to the Thai language, participants will develop a general understanding of cultural and sociolinguistic aspects of the language.

THAI LANGUAGE LEARNING OUTCOMES

The Thai Language courses are designed and structured for the busy working professional who aspires to attain language mastery in the Thai Language.
Competencies achieved through attending the progressive courses are useful to building confidence so as to enable the individual to speak, understand and read basic syntax in the newly-acquired language focus.
Courses are designed in a structured and coherent manner, positioned from an adult perspective so that they closely address and match the adults’ learner’s quest for continuing education.

By the end of the course, students will have acquired basic communicative competencies useful in selected everyday situations and personal interactions, as well as vital strategies for language learning and language use.

Through the course, students will acquire basic linguistic and socio-cultural knowledge of the Thai language. Students will learn to acquire basic grammar and vocabulary to perform authentic communicative tasks in everyday situations.
They will be able to comprehend short listening texts, as well as express themselves in a variety of topical situations in daily life as well as during personal interactions. They will also gain an understanding of the target language society and observe how the language is used in the Thai context. They will acquire language learning and communication strategies that will support their language learning and language use.

This course is designed to teach students the basics of Thai language which include basic grammatical concepts, text reading and conversation skills.

Course Content:
Students will be engaging in pedagogical tasks to achieve the following communicative functions:
1. greetings and leave-taking expressions
2. asking for and giving directions
3. describing people, places and things
4. expressing likes, dislikes, preferences
5. making comparisons
6. making requests
7. offering helps
8. asking for and giving clarification
9. giving reasons

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Communicate in Thai applying the basic structures, expressions and vocabulary learned throughout the course to the selected and daily life contexts.
2. Read and write simple words using the basic Thai writing system (tones by default) learned in class.
