Bachelor of Arts / Social Sciences (Honours)

The undergraduate programme, leading to the Bachelor of Arts, or the Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours), is very flexible and students are encouraged to take any of the modules offered in Communications and New Media (CNM) as well as modules from other departments in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the School of Computing and the School of Business.

The core of the CNM Programme is new media studies, which focus on the societal impact of new technologies on our social, cultural, political and economic landscape.

The Programme integrates media studies, mass communications, computational communication, communication management, interactive media design and cultural studies.  The Programme cuts across the interdisciplinary intersections of social sciences, humanities, arts and computing, and prepares  students as future hybrid media professionals through mastery in critical, creative, qualitative, quantitative and computational research. Our horizontal training will ground students in foundational, transferable and job-specific skills.

The learning outcomes of the CNM major are:

  1. To train students for advanced understanding of the discipline and application in communication and new media studies;
  2. To equip students with theory-based practices by integrating theory and practice;
  3. To professionalise students through industry immersion and work-integrated learning;
  4. To prepare students to be critically-engaged global citizens and understand the role of communication in the broader context through media and cultural literacies;
  5. To instil students’ ethical awareness and understanding of the workings of power, difference, diversity and inclusion;
  6. To foster students’ intellectual curiosity for socially impactful engagement;
  7. To build a learning community of practice in new media communication.

Students can choose from a wide range of modules covering subjects like computer mediated communication, human computer interaction, culture industries, media policy and regulation and game, visual and interactive media design. The communication management area provides an overview of the theory, principles and application of communication research, planning, and management in organisations. Students interested in careers in communication management in the age of interactive and new media have the unique opportunity to combine learning about interactive media with designing content for new media and doing research for communication management.

With this multi-faceted understanding of new media and communications, CNM graduates will be able to work in a wide spectrum of private corporations and public agencies, in policy formulation, public relations, corporate communication, research and information management positions.

CNM is the only programme in Singapore and Southeast Asia that offers a concentration in communications and new media studies within a single department. The programme is innovative and dynamic, taking into account the ever-changing new media landscape both in Singapore and the rest of the world.

Students from Cohort 2020 and before may choose to complete the 3-year Bachelor of Arts programme, or the 4-year Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) programme. Students admitted from 2021 onwards will be automatically admitted to the 4-year Honours programme. Students may find out more about the graduation requirements here.
