Master of Arts in English Language and Linguistics (Coursework) (admitted from August 2024 Intake and after)

The Master of Arts in English Language and Linguistics (Coursework) is a fully taught programme, designed to be completed in one year of intensive full-time study, or over a longer period of part-time study. Only those locally domiciled are eligible for part-time study.

To qualify for the degree of Master of Arts in English Language and Linguistics, candidates will be required to pass 40 Units or 10 courses (each course is worth 4 Units), which include:

  1. one compulsory course: ELC5104 Approaches to Language
  2. a minimum of 5 other EL or ELC level-5000 courses
  3. a maximum of 2 non-EL or non-ELC level-5000 courses on related subjects (subject to department approval)
  4. a maximum of 2 EL level-4000 courses (subject to department approval)

Candidates who have completed equivalent courses that were not used towards obtaining another degree prior to admission to the Master of Arts in English Language and Linguistics may apply to the Department for an exemption of course(s), subject to a maximum of 50% of the MA requirements.

Candidates must obtain a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.00 for all examinable courses. The candidature of a student will be terminated if he/she:

  • obtains a GPA of less than 2.5 for two consecutive semesters, or less than 3.0 for three consecutive semesters; or
  • fails more than two courses

Candidates must fulfil 50% residency in Singapore.

Master of Arts in English Language and Linguistics (Coursework) (for August 2023 Intake and before)

The Master of Arts in English Language and Linguistics (Coursework) is a fully taught programme, designed to be completed in one year of intensive full-time study, or over a longer period of part-time study. Only those locally domiciled are eligible for part-time study.

These 10 courses include:

    • ELC5104 Approaches to Language
    • One 5000-level EL course for each of three compulsory subject areas (three courses total):

Area A: Sound Patterns
Area B: Grammatical Structure and Meaning
Area C: Language in Use

Students may consult a current list of courses approved for each compulsory subject area upon commencing the program. Note that all 5000-level courses offered in EL will fulfil at least one of the three subject area requirements.

Subject to the approval of the Department, candidates may take up to 2 non-EL or non-ELC level-5000 courses on related subjects. Students may also take up to 2 4000-level courses in EL.
