Marc YEO Yi Fei
I obtained my bachelor’s in linguistics and multilingual studies in 2022 from Nanyang Technological University, and am currently doing my MA in NUS. My academic interests lie primarily in Korean linguistics, critical discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, multilingualism, multimodality and areal studies (particularly of North Korea, South Korea and Central Asia).
I developed an interest in foreign languages since secondary school when I first began to study Korean. During my time at NTU, I explored this interest in various ways: interning at a foreign language school, serving as a committee member in NTU’s Korean Cultural Society and working with Korean researchers on various linguistics-related projects. While I am primarily interested in Korean, I enjoy learning a variety of foreign languages, like Mongolian and Vietnamese. In the future, I hope to pursue a career in the linguistic research of North Korea and Korean diasporic communities around the word.

| Other Experience and Information | I received the Nanyang Scholarship (2018-2022) for my undergraduate studies at NTU and was on the Dean’s list for three years during my time at NTU. I graduated with a Lee Kuan Yew Gold Medal, which is awarded to the top performing student in each academic programme.
I have worked as a research assistant for Dr. Hyejeong Ahn (University of Melbourne, previously from NTU), who is primarily a scholar of World Englishes who also does research on Korean linguistics, and Dr. Jieun Kiaer (University of Oxford, Oriental Institute), who is a professor of Korean language and linguistics. I also did a short stint at a Korean edu-tech company called IDesignLab (아이디자인랩), by helping to design a Korean learning application for novice learners. While I primarily speak English, Chinese or Korean, I am currently learning Russian for my thesis fieldwork. I have also studied more than ten other languages in school and by myself (albeit only to an elementary level), such as Uzbek, Uighur, Vietnamese, Mongolian, French, Turkish, Thai and Arabic. |
