From 16 through 20 October 2017, the Department of Japanese Studies organized a week-long traditional theater event focusing on Kyōgen. Two Kyōgen actors from the Shigeyama family: Shigeyama Doji and Shimada Hiromi to conduct workshops and lecture demonstrations. The last day of the Kyōgen week, 20 October was a symposium titled “Symposium on Traditional Performance: Perspectives from Japan and Southeast Asia.”

The five-day program was organized by Associate Professor Lim Beng Choo with support from Dr Miguel Escobar Varela from Theater Studies Program, Department of English Language and Literature; the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Singapore Foundation; the Mitsui NUS Japanese Studies Southeast Asia Fund.
