Brief Introduction

I did both my B.A. and M.A. in philosophy at NUS. My honours thesis was on the possibility of moral disagreement with aliens who lack moral emotions and my master's thesis was on the role of feelings in the making of moral judgment. I'm now mostly interested in issues of racial equality, distributive justice, animal advocacy, disability rights, and how they relate to utilitarianism.

Brief Introduction

I am a Ph.D. student in Philosophy at the Department of Philosophy, NUS.

My primary research interests are in depiction theory (especially the role of resemblance in explaining depiction), Arthur Danto’s philosophy of art (especially the Indiscernible Counterparts Argument and the theory of “the End of Art“), the aesthetics of XieYi（写意）and the definition of art.

My PhD supervisor is Prof. Ben BLUMSON.

I hold an M.A. degree in Art Theory from Peking University. I also hold two B.A. degrees from Peking University, the major one is in History and Theory of Arts and the double one is in Philosophy.

Brief Introduction

Jonathan has a Master of Arts (Philosophy). He specialises in Classical Chinese philosophy and agent-based modelling. He has been researching ways of testing the effects of certain ethical concepts on a societal level through the use of computer simulations, modelling the behaviour and observing the effects of agents practicing certain ethical norms in the context of an artificial society. Jonathan has a special interest in crossing beyond disciplinary boundaries in the search for fascinating new insights to age-old problems. For his knowledge of philosophy across a spectrum of issues, he has been invited to discuss philosophical issues about technology and society in panel discussions for the Financial Times, Channel NewsAsia, and the Institute of Asian Consumer Insight. He recently edited a book on the Grand Challenges for Science in the 21st Century, (New Jersey: World Scientific, 2018) featuring insights from prominent Nobel laureates and academics from around the world. He is passionate about teaching and he enjoys sharing his love for philosophy. He has been teaching a variety of general education modules in NUS since 2016 to undergraduate students and adult learners from diverse backgrounds. At present, he is teaching computational methods in problem-solving and how to critically assess algorithms for biases and algorithmic injustices to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

Brief Introduction

Md Shahidul Islam received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in philosophy at Jahangirnagar University in Bangladesh. He also competed an MSc in Logic at the Institute for Logic, Language, and Computation at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. He was teaching philosophy at Jahangirnagar University until he began his PhD at National University of Singapore in 2022. His current PhD research focuses on the use of paradoxes in Nagarjuna’s philosophy. His interests include Indian Philosophy, Nagarjuna, Wittgenstein, Nietzsche, the power and limits of logic, philosophy of religious language, and the philosophy of philosophy.

Brief Introduction

I am currently a MA student at NUS Philosophy. At a general level, I am interested in philosophical questions about the nature of reality, and the relationship between our epistemology, language and reality. This has led me to my primary research interest in the metaphysics of consciousness and my other interests in philosophy of science, philosophy of language, epistemology, metaethics, philosophy of logic, philosophy of mathematics and the analytic-synthetic divide.

Brief Introduction

I hold a BSc in Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method from the London School of Economics. My undergraduate dissertation was on Lewisian Epistemic Contextualism and Skepticism.As an M.A. student at the NUS, my project aims to overcome Heidegger’s critique of metaphysics and return to a notion subjectivity. For this, I work closely with and give reinterpretations of Hegel, Kristeva, Barthes, Kierkegaard, Derrida and Han.
