24 photos win prizes at Picture Singapore 2014; on exhibition till 22 September 2014
September 10, 2014
At the Picture Singapore 2014 Award Ceremony, held on September 4th at Theatrette 2 in NUS Central Library, 24 select photographs were awarded and celebrated for embodying Singapore. There were 2 1st Prizes, 2 Popular Choice Awards, and 20 Merit Prizes given to talented winners from FASS.
Presenting the awards were two of the competition’s judges, Dr. Gilbert Yeoh (FASS Faculty, English Language and Literature), and Mr. Tan Sie Wee (FASS alumni, Economics; interactive and media producer at NUS CIT). The judges also spoke about their judging process and their favorite photographs.
Kenneth Chan Shengjie’s “Construction Yard” and Loo May Eng’s “Ang Mo Kio” received 1st Prizes worth $200 each. “Construction Yard” portrays beauty in the unlikeliest of places – a construction site in Jurong East, while “Ang Mo Kio” captures the charm of kids playing football at the void deck of a HDB apartment.
Popular Choice Awards were given to the 2 photos which received the highest number of likes on Facebook. Geraldine Mark’s “Community = Common Unity” and “Youth and Pipe Dreams”, receiving 71 likes and 70 likes respectively, won both Popular Choice Awards worth $100 each. The vision of community as a common unity was reflected in Geraldine’s euphoric photo of the National Day celebrations; her “Youth and Pipe Dreams” expresses youthful vigour and vitality.
All the prize-winning photographs are on display at the Artsbuzz gallery in the Central Library until 22 September 2014, so don’t miss your chance to see them. In addition, Picture Singapore partner, The Photo Thing, have a display table at Artsbuzz gallery showcasing some of their work. Do check out these eye-catching, uniquely Singaporean depictions of life in the little red dot!
