The Singaporean workers who feel AI has nothing to do with them

Driven by rapid technological advancements and a strong national push for digitalization, Singapore’s workforce landscape is undergoing a significant transformation. As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes deeply embedded across industries, it introduces distinct challenges for workforce equity. Unlike entry-level white-collar roles where AI adoption is swift, many frontline and service sectors remain largely untouched by these tools, raising critical concerns regarding future career mobility and market bifurcation.

In ‘The Singaporean workers who feel AI has nothing to do with them’ (The Straits Times, 15 June 2026), S R Nathan Professor Irene Y.H. Ng (NUS Social Work & NUS Social Service Research Centre), Tan Zhi Han (NUS Social Service Research Centre), V Deepa, and Aaron Lim (both NUS Social Work) explore how uneven AI exposure shapes capability gaps among young Singaporeans. Drawing on targeted field research and participant data, the researchers examined the adoption rates and technical proficiency of generative AI tools among lower-income and lower-educated workers compared to their higher-income peers.

The researchers identified a compounding ‘triple challenge’ faced by lower-educated workers: limited exposure, limited access, and limited relevance. Because their daily routines in retail, delivery, and hospitality do not necessitate advanced digital hardware, these workers experience lower technological enthusiasm and higher resistance. Over time, this lack of engagement creates an AI proficiency gap, as higher-educated workers continuously refine their skills through regular experimentation and advanced prompting techniques. The findings suggest that this divergence does not merely threaten immediate job displacement but instead restricts future upward mobility when AI literacy becomes a prerequisite for supervisory or administrative promotions.

While national initiatives offer training allowances and subsidized tool access, the authors emphasise that structural interventions must occur at the workplace level. Employers can proactively integrate AI into frontline workflows, such as using automated tools for preschool report drafting or retail inventory communications, to make the technology practically relevant. Additionally, community organisations and public libraries can provide crucial computing infrastructure and peer coaching. In the end, bridging the AI literacy gap is essential to ensure that technological progression supports broad-based social mobility rather than reinforcing labour market divisions.
