Social Work Talent Admission Route (STAR)

STAR seeks to identify students who demonstrate strong aptitude and motivation for the social work profession. Through a holistic assessment process, STAR recognises applicants with the values, passion, and commitment essential to social work – beyond academic results alone.

Applicants may be admitted on the basis of demonstrated aptitude and interest in social services, leadership, community service, and/or exceptional talent. They must also demonstrate potential to contribute meaningfully to society as future social work leaders and meet the minimum level of academic requirements.

Why Apply Through STAR

A pathway for passionate changemakers
STAR is designed for those who have a strong calling to serve, and whose passion, commitment, and social awareness make them well-suited for the profession.

Holistic assessment beyond grades
STAR allows NUS Social Work to offer undergraduate admission to a small number of students through a holistic approach.

Admission through STAR remains competitive and subject to overall assessment outcomes. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission.

Nurturing tomorrow's social work leaders
Through STAR, NUS Social Work welcomes students with a sense of purpose and who are ready to learn, serve, and advocate for others as part of a profession dedicated to individuals, families, and communities who face systemic disadvantage or vulnerability.

How STAR Applications are Reviewed

Applications to STAR are assessed holistically, taking into account both academic results and non-academic qualities.

The review considers:

1. Academic eligibility
Applicants must meet the minimum undergraduate admission requirements.

2. Aptitude and motivation for social work
Reflected through your personal statement and prior experiences/achievements.

3. Personal values and qualities
Reflected through your written responses and interviews with the Admissions Committee.
