LCG Director's Welcome
We embark on the 10th year of LCG this year, 2026, and reiterate once more the honour of being the recipient of a gift by the Mrs Lee Choon Guan Trust to establish an endowed NUS social work practice research fund. The Social Work Department is indebted to Dr Rosaleen Ow (left in photo) for her determined efforts to get the Mrs Lee Choon Guan Endowed Research Fund established about a decade ago.
We are excited about the positive long-term impact of practice research as local and creative answers to the challenges of our ageing society, to tough choices faced by families and the unique needs of marginalised groups in Singapore.
This revamped website aims to add to the knowledge base on practice research and encourage more social work practitioners and students to be curious and creative in finding solutions to new and age-old problems.

Message from Mr Keith Chua, Mrs Lee Choon Guan Endowed Research Fund Trustee
It is a wonderful privilege for the Mrs Lee Choon Guan Charitable Trust to partner with the National University of Singapore in the establishment of the Mrs Lee Choon Guan Endowed Research Fund. This Fund resides with the Department of Social Work and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
I am particularly grateful to members of the university and the social service sector who have agreed to serve on the Steering Committee for this Fund.
The early days of the LCG have been focused on establishing a framework for the intentional scaling up of social work practice research in Singapore, including seminars on practice research. This continues to this day.
I acknowledge the important work of social workers, researchers and other social service practitioners accompanying and caring for individuals and families in need. When I was being advised of my career choice back in the 1970s, I can honestly say social work was not high on that list.
Nevertheless, over the decades, many students – driven by hearts of care and compassion -- chose this vital and highly needed vocation as a career, with many coming in mid-career as well. This has brought our Singapore social service sector to the professional level that we are at today while ensuring that, at the core, remains meeting and serving the needs of others.
