Brief Introduction
Dr Chi joined the Centre for Language Studies as a lecturer (convenor) for Korean language Programme in January 2008. She obtained her Master of Education in Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language, and Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Language & Literature, at Kyung Hee University. Since 2000, she had been actively involved in teaching, coordinating content and curriculum development at the Institute of International Education at Kyung Hee University.
She was previously in charge of Korean language learning programmes for diplomats in Kyung Hee University. From February 2007, she was an exchange teacher at NUS Extension to help improve on Korean Language programme and develop new courses.
Teaching Areas
I have taught Korean language at all levels since 2000 when I was teaching at Kyung Hee University, South Korea and later at NUS Extension. Having taught students from all walks of life, including diplomats, employees from various companies, high school students, I have come to understand the needs of my students and to adapt my teaching methods accordingly. During my time in NUS, I hope to inspire and motivate my students to regard Korean language as not only just a foreign language, but something which they can use communicatively to express themselves.
I was awarded Faculty and University Teaching Excellence Awards in 2010, 2011,2012. I am also awareded honor roll from 2013-2018.
Current Research
My current research area is on foreign language learning in a multicultural setting, with a special focus on Korean language. I am very happy to have this privilege of living and teaching in Singapore. Being a multicultural society, it is heartening to see Singaporeans appreciating Korean culture and language.
I am Principal Investigator in one project on the use of podcasting as an educational medium, one involving the production and evaluation of language podcasts in Korean as a Foreign Language (together with AP Chan Wai Meng)
Research Interests
My research interest lies in developing an appropriate Korean language curriculum and textbook to suit the Singapore context. As with other foreigners, Singapore students do face certain levels of difficulty in understanding Korean grammar and vocabulary. I hope to help students deal with these problems effectively and become better language learners.
