Annie Tan Southeast Asian Language Prize

In 2024, the family of Mrs. Wan Boo Sow pledged an endowment of $300,000 and an expendable gift of $30,000 to the Centre to establish the Annie Tan Southeast Asian Language Prize.

Aimed to encourage undergraduate students from the NUS Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (“FASS”) to pursue and advance their learning journey of Southeast Asian languages, the eligible language courses include, Arabic, Bahasa Indonesia, Chinese, Hindi, Malay, Spanish, Tamil, Thai, and Vietnamese.

Subject to rule 7, the award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. To be eligible for the award, a student must pass the course (as specified in the award criteria) offered by the Centre in the academic year of consideration. The prize will be awarded to the best performing FASS student in the course.
  2. Prizes for courses of level 1 and 2 of the languages will be $100 each, for level 3 and 4 will be $200 each, while for level 5 onwards will be $300 each. Up to two prizes will be awarded for each course per semester. The language must not be the mother-tongue of the award recipient.
  3. The award recipients must be Singapore-born Citizens, naturalised Singapore Citizens born in ASEAN and ASEAN Citizens. Eligible male applicants who are Singapore Citizens must have completed full-time National Service.
  4. Students should obtain at least a grade C or S for students who exercised the S/U (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) option for the course. Awards will be made based on higher marks scored for the relevant course. The GPA will be used as the tie-breaker when two or more students score the same marks.
  5. No award will be made should there be no candidate of sufficient merit.
