Alumni Job Sharing Session – Working with Data
Dear Students,
The digital transformation of our society results in a rapid increase in data produced and collected, spurring the growth of data related jobs. Thus, we take great pleasure to invite you to sign up for the third Alumni Job Sharing Session on 25 October (Monday), at 6pm – 7 pm, by two alumni who are currently working with data.
Our alumni are Jovi Loo, a Data Scientist at GovTech, and Tek Yong Jian, a Data Scientist at Grab.

The two speakers will be addressing the following questions at the session:
- How did you get your job? What could be the reasons you were hired?
- Which economics modules that you took at NUS that were useful and relevant in helping you secure the job?
- What is your job designation? What is your job scope? Which department are you in, and what segment of the market are you serving/ supporting?
- What do you do on a normal workday? Explain your job tasks.
- Who do you interact with in the organization, and why?
- Why and how do you interact with clients (if applicable)?
- What are the challenges faced so far, as an early-career employee? How do you overcome these?
- What is your projected career path? What do you need to do to move to the next level?
- What do you think are important qualities and skill-set needed to succeed in this job as a Data Scientist and other aspects of life in the public/private sector?
- Highlight some tips for the undergraduates on getting a job during this pandemic time.

JOVI LOO is a Data Scientist in the Government Technology Agency (GovTech), and he is passionate about using technology for the public good. He graduated with Honours from NUS in 2019 with a Joint Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH).

TEK YONG JIAN graduated from NUS in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics, with Honours. He works as a Data Scientist in the Grab Financial Group, where he deals with quantifying credit risk. He is also the personal butler to an 8-year-old “Singapore Special”. Ask him about either!
